Some Key Words and their meaning about having eternal life
Trinity 13.
" But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe." Galatians 3:22
There are some key words here we should think about in this short text from the Apostle's letter to the Galatians:
"the scripture"
"all under sin"
"promise by faith of Jesus Christ"
"given"
"to them that believe"
First of all the Scripture . Who believes that the Scriptures are the Word of God and of Christ? Jesus did. He accepted the Old Testament of the Jewish people as God -breathed Scripture. He constantly quoted the Scripture to the leaders of the church /synagogue at that time. It was the Scriptures that Jesus referred to on that walk on Resurrection Evening to Cleopas and his companion. " And beginning at Moses and all the prophets he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself." Luke 24:27
The Scripture tells us the truth about ourselves. Would we not want to have it that way? When the dr fails to tell us what he knows we are probably wondering why he did not give us all the information. No one wants to live in the dark. But, " all are shut up under sin" . The law makes us conscious of our need for salvation and tells us we cannot solve the problem of sin by ourselves. By trying to be saved by observing the law we will fail. The apostle writes to the people there to let them know that " by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." 2:16 Specifically the rite of circumcision which some of them were insisting on for Gentile believers was not necessary. The rite was not salvation. The rite was God's sign pointing to His gracious promise of faith.
This is through faith of Jesus Christ. " There is a place for rites and ceremonies, if these are used to make Christ and His power more real. ...the highest function of conscience is to reveal the need of a power outside of self and to lead a person to Christ who can impart power for right living." Charles R. Erdman, Galatians.
" Given to them that believe" It is a gift, and it is given. But we must take the gift of eternal life by believing in His Son Jesus Christ, not by works of the law or our own good deeds. " And the law is not of faith....Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: as it is written,' Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:' , that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith." Galatians 3:12-14
