BIBLE SUNDAY THE WORD OF GOD OUR LIGHT AND LIFE IN CHRIST

2nd S in Advent----the most famous Collect/Prayer in the PB
" The Word of God is a two-edged sword; as for the weapons of natural reason, they are the armour of Saul, rather cumbersome about the Soldier of Christ than needful. They are not of force to do that which the Apostles of Christ did by the power of the Holy Ghost: ' My preaching', therefore saith Paul, 'hath not been has not been in the enticing speech of man's wisdom , but in plain evidence of the Spirit and of power, that your faith may not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.' ...if I believe the Gospel there needeth no reasoning about it to persuade me, if I do not believe, it must be the Spirit of God, and not the reason of man that shall convert my heart unto him." Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity , Richard Hooker, 1554-1600, Anglican theologian.

The question today is about the Word of God, the Holy Scriptures , 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. The prayer for today is well-known, " BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen."

"I am a man of one Book. "
John Wesley.

A Bible in the hand is worth two in the bookcase. traditional

Men do not reject the Bible because it contradicts itself, but because it contradicts them. traditional

The many lessons we have today if we looked at them all as one unity are all about the power of the Scriptures , the Word of God to affect change in the world , and in the hearts of all who hear it.

EP reading" But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts." I Thess 2

"we preached unto you the gospel of God. Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe: As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as father doth his children. That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. For this cause also we thank God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe." I Thess 2 again ep reading

"My doctor had recommended surgery and referred me to a specialist. Arriving early for my appointment, I found the door unlocked and the young surgeon, deeply engrossed in reading, behind the receptionist's desk. When he didn't hear me come in, I cleared my throat. Startled, he closed the book, which I recognized as a Bible. "Does reading the Bible help you before or after an operation?" I asked. My fears were dispelled by his soft, one-word answer: "During."

Eleanor Schmidt, in Reader's Digest."

Who of us has not turned to the Holy Scriptures in times of great loss, disappointment or anguish? Who of us has not needed its light upon our path and illumination to know God's Will in our lives?

We trust the Scriptures because as the reading in 2 Timothy 3 says in mp, "
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works."

But Isaiah 55 is my favorite reading from mp for today, "
Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: "

Today is Bible Sunday. I am not ashamed to call it that. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Psalm 119 When we went to battle in the Army, the Soldier asks for protection but what he or she wanted more than anything else was a pocket Bible that would be their comfort in a time of great trial.

Is anyone here going through trial, loss , disappointment or fear and anxiety?
Trust in the Lord of the Word, our Saviour Christ and who is the Word of God. John 1 says it to us:

He was in the beginning, and the Word was God and the Word was with God. In Him was life, and the life is the light of men. "If we have any dispute in the ACNA or any disagreement, the answer is always in the Bible, not in any man.

" BLESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen."
