Jairus' Daughter and our fears

Jairus' Daughter Mark 5
Mark shows that Jesus is Lord of nature ( storm on the Sea), Lord of all in bondage ( casts out the demons) & today Lord of life ( the daughter of Jairus). In all of these I note that all wished to be healed, saved from destruction , and came and worshipped at the feet of Jesus . Mark 5:6 says that was what the man with the demons did. Of course the disciples did that with the storm when they woke Jesus as the waves were filling the boat. Jairus did the same thing. He came 5:22, " He fell at his feet, and beseecheth Him much saying, ' My little daughter is at the point of death: I pray thee, that thou come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be made whole, and live."

The first thing we see is that Jairus was though wealthy, and a ruler of the synagogue, came to Jesus for what he thought He may do for his daughter who was dying. This is what all need----to come to Jesus, but it depends on the person and the situation when they come or if they do come. Many as we learned from the book, The Myth of the non-Christian do not , being turned off to the Church for various reasons, lack of seeing Jesus there, or hypocrites in the Church , or whatever reason they may have , such having a bad experience. One parish I was in a couple who were living together wished their relationship to be blessed by me ,even though they were not going to get married due to the lady having military benefits and would lose them. They left the Church when I told them I had talked with the Presiding Bishop , and he felt this was not something we could do for them. Leaders try and make good decisions based on the Bible & good tradition but it does not always make people happy.

"Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.” CS Lewis

" I didn't go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don't recommend Christianity." CS Lewis

2. Jesus did go with Jairus , v. 24 but there was an interruption. The woman who had spent much on doctors came to touch the hem of Jesus' garment, and she did. She was healed by her faith and the power of Jesus...but while Jesus was speaking to her, " they come from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying, ' Thy daughter is dead.' "

We too experience this. There is a situation. We want action. We do not want to wait for anything. It should be fixed now, but then an interruption. The pauses are there for a reason that we do not know. And that is life lived under the watchfulness and overuling of God Almighty. He operates on His timetable, not ours.

3. Finally, we see the result of the request of Jairus for his 12 year old daughter. Mark gives a vivid picture. Jesus tells Jairus, " Fear not, only believe." They already had come from the ruler of the synagogue's house saying, " Thy daughter is dead: why trouble thou the Teacher any further?" v. 35

The word for fear is phobia , present imperative middle & the word for believe is present imperative active. We all need to hear this. Do not have fears Jesus says to Jairus and to us. But have faith and trust.

This is Jesus' power over death , and " His ability to bestow, even to the most hopeless, the life which is eternal."
The daughter of Jairus lives. He says to her in Aramaic, " Little one, arise." And she does. Immediately she gets up and walks about.

So what we say? Or we say this is something I really need. I need to know and affirm for myself the power of Jesus in my life. He can do whatever He wants. We are to be humble, and to know His love in the moments of our lives, and in even the desperate of situations and times He can heal , forgive, and bring new life.
AMEN..
