Compassion

mark 8. Compassion----7th after Trinity The Epistle Romans vi. 19. I SPEAK after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. St. Mark viii. 1. IN those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far. And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven. And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets. And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away. Prayer for today--- The Collect LORD of all power and might, who art the author and giver of all good things; Graft in our hearts the love of thy Name, increase in us true religion, nourish us with all goodness, and of thy great mercy keep us in the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 8 CONTRIBUTORS TO PEACE OF MIND Duke University did a study on “peace of mind.” Factors found to contribute greatly to emotional and mental stability are: 1. The absence of suspicion and resentment. Nursing a grudge was a major factor in unhappiness. 2. Not living in the past. An unwholesome preoccupation with old mistakes and failures leads to depression. 3. Not wasting time and energy fighting conditions you cannot change. Cooperate with life, instead of trying to run away from it. 4. Force yourself to stay involved with the living world. Resist the temptation to withdraw and become reclusive during periods of emotional stress. 5. Refuse to indulge in self-pity when life hands you a raw deal. Accept the fact that nobody gets through life without some sorrow and misfortune. 6. Cultivate the old-fashioned virtues—love, humor, compassion and loyalty. 7. Do not expect too much of yourself. When there is too wide a gap between self-expectation and your ability to meet the goals you have set, feelings of inadequacy are inevitable. 8. Find something bigger than yourself to believe in. Self-centered egotistical people score lowest on any test for measuring happiness. ----Found this from a friend of FB , a pastor: YOU MIGHT BE A PASTOR IF... from Rev. Hank Roberts on FB. ~ You've waded in a creek wearing a necktie. ~ You've ever dreamed you were preaching only to waken and discover that you were. ~ You'd rather negotiate with terrorists than the church organist. ~ You see a picnic as no picnic. ~ You've ever wanted to fire the church and form a congregation search committee. ~ You've been tempted to take up an offering at a family reunion. ~ You've ever wanted to give the sound man some feedback of your own. ~ You've ever wanted to lay hands on a deacon, and you didn't mean praying for him. ~ You often feel like you are herding cats instead of shepherding sheep. ~ Your sermons have a happy ending...everyone's happy when it ends. ~ You've never preached on TV, because your wife made you get down before you broke something. ~ You feel that it is your job to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. ( a little humor because to have compassion we coud lighten up a lot) ++++++++++++++++++++ Jesus had compassion on the multitude. Word Origin from splagchnon Definition--splagxnízomai – "from splanxna, 'the inward parts,' especially the nobler entrails – the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys. These gradually came to denote the seat of the affections" to be moved in the inward parts, i.e. to feel compassion feel compassion (2), felt compassion (7), moved with compassion (2), take pity (1). There is a story about Dr. Benjamin Warfield. ( in sermon by Rev. John Gullick, 2016) While he was still at the height of his academic powers, his wife got sick. In fact it happened on their honeymoon. The newlyweds travelled to Germany and were hiking on top of a mountain when Mrs. Warfield was struck by lightning and she became an invalid. He took care of her the rest of her life and it was reported he rarely (although some have said never) spent more than 2 hours away from his wife. Even though she was handicapped, she still loved to read. And so Dr. Warfield would sit at her bedside day after day. And read to her. He was always gentle and caring with her. One day, someone asked him, "Have you ever thought about taking your wife to an institution?" Then you could write bigger books and have a bigger ministry." But Dr. Warfield said, "No way. My wife is my ministry. I will never leave her side. I am going to love her and take care of her as long as God grants us life." Maybe that is what makes Warfield's career as a theologian and thinker even more impressive? It was during this time he wrote books and continues to teach. One of Warfield's most important book is called "The Person and Work of Christ" There is a chapter in that book is entitled, ¡°The Emotional Life of Our Lord. He tried to synthesize the biblical passages that spoke of the emotions of our Lord Jesus. He stated, "His whole life was a mission of mercy...His entire ministry is summed up as going around the land and ,doing good." ++++++++++ Compassion of Jesus for us.
