Catching Fish and FISHERS of Men
Luke 5. The Catch of Fish
I am not a fisherman. I only went one time with my grandfather in California, and never did it again. My guess is that fishing is not so easy. Timing , the right bait, the right equipment, the right place...etc...Fishing is not so easy, is it? But if want to eat fish we have to be patient and listen to the wisdom of other fisherman who can tell us how to do it properly.
Peter and his partners, James & John , the sons of Zebedee were rather exhausted I imagine after doing they thought all the right fishing thing. They fished at night ( the preferred time for fishing), but " took nothing." 5:5 They had just listened to the Lord teach from the boat , sitting, as the teacher's position vs 4, along with the crowd who were " pressing in on Him to hear the Word of God"
( an aside here....how great to see people really want to hear the Word of God instead of the Word of ______?----if we believe it is God's Word, we should be eager to see others know and share it too with them)
Jesus obviously reads Peter very well, and he says when he had finished speaking, " Put out into the deep, and let your nets down for a draught (catch)." 5:4 He is showing He knows what is happening with Peter. He knows us too better than we know ourselves.
Peter objects because Peter knows a great deal about fishing ...in fact he had been doing this quite a while, and Zebedee also was there who was the father of James and John who also knew a good amount of what had just happened. They had spent all night, and done all the right things...but not a fish caught. Our Lord knows our stories as well. He knows what we need, and when we need it. He knows before we ask.
Peter obeyed. " At thy word I will let down the nets" 5:5 Some of us need to get there where Peter was ...obedience is the key to life here and the life to come. When Jesus says do it, we should. There should be no quibbling about that. I note that no one else objected either which is good. Peter did what Jesus said. Do not argue with God . Of course we all do. I give Peter credit here. He listened to Jesus, and did what He said.
The result was miraculous. How too we need to know that after doing it our way we must yield to the Word of the Lord and the Way of the Lord. We too are too much trying on our own without the Holy Spirit, and His leading in our endeavours for Him. He wants us to know without Him we can do nothing. Listen to Him first.
Peter realized he was in the presence of the divine. This was not just some fluke of the day. How we too must bow in His presence and recognize our sin and unwillingness to be His partners. We too often wish things but we are not listening to His Word. " Know this; that you are not able to do these things of yourself, nor to walk in the Commandments of God, and to serve Him, without His special grace; which you must learn at all times to call for by diligent prayer" 1928 Offices of Instruction
Lastly, Jesus having called His followers to not be afraid for they shall catch men. Here the word is zoey in the greek which is catching them alive . We are to catch men alive by the Word of God , presenting our thoughts, our concerns and our grace through His grace in meekness that are taken captive by the devil. Gentleness is the right way to persuade, but persuade we must. Our witness is catching men alive ....not beating them over the head.
" And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all, and followed Him." 5:11 Amen.
